You’re Never To Old!
You’re never to old to do the things in life that you love.
Be it flying an airplane, sailing the oceans of the world, reading a book, or volunteering at your favorite cause, age does not have to stop us from doing the things we love. If money is an issue, make more of it. If health is the problem, find a way to participate in a way your health permits.
There will always be a reason not to do something. These are excuses for which we find easily. Rationales to do something, on the other hand, are much harder to come by.
My Mind is Writing Checks My Body Just Can’t Cash!
I realize that there are some who just can’t physically perform like they used to. Eventually, this will happen to all of us. But that still doesn’t mean we can’t do the things we love.
I have a friend to whom life was all about basketball. He loved this more than anything in life. His knees eventually gave out and he was no longer able to play. He now teaches kids how to play the game and loves it even more than he did when he could compete.
When life throws you a curve ball, deal with it, and then learn how to catch a curve ball. It really comes down to how you look at it in your own head.
I love flying and sailing. These are two activities that don’t bode well for people who are aging. There will be a day when I lose my medical and can no longer act as pilot in command. Does that mean I will quit flying? I don’t think so. I will still be able to fly with somebody else. Furthermore, I can still enjoy being around planes, “hanger flying”, and the camaraderie that comes with it. Teaching and mentoring people who dream of flying has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life in aviation. There is no reason in the world I should have to give this up if I can’t pass my physical.
To sum it all up, it comes down to a decision to do the best with the hand we are dealt and learning to find enjoyment in the things we can do. Teaching others, mentoring, and sharing a lifetime of wisdom and knowledge are far more rewarding than simply being able to do something for ourselves. This is the great irony of life. You’re Never to old!
